Corporate Safety Officer 

Position summary:  Plans, directs and implements the Company Safety Program to ensure a safe, healthy and accident-free work environment on every project.

Position responsibilities:

  • Develops specific objectives and strategies to maintain an effective safety program that complies with federal, state and local safety regulations
  • Conducts comprehensive on-site safety assessments of projects as part of constant monitoring process and monitors corrective actions taken
  • Participates in pre-construction and handoff meetings
  • Develops and administers safety incentive programs
  • Develops and maintains documentation for the Safety Manual, Safety/EEO booklet, Fleet Operations Program, Emergency Management Plan and the Substance Abuse Policy
  • Develops and administers the company substance abuse policy; establishes testing programs and identifies providers; monitors the testing program to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations; provides information on rehabilitation assistance to employees
  • Plans and implements programs to train employees in work site safety practices
  • Develops Tool Box Safety Talks in compliance with Company safety policies; educates project personnel
  • Implements and maintains the Fleet Operations Policy
  • Provides information, signs, posters, personal protective equipment, barriers, etc. to projects
  • Reviews accident and incident documentation to insure all required records and reports are complete and accurate; ensures corrective action is implemented
  • Participates in investigating all accidents resulting in lost time injuries or major property, liability or equipment damage; produces investigative reports
  • Represents the Company in all safety related hearings (OSHA, etc.)
  • Prepares all required regulatory reports and ensures they are submitted timely
  • Maintains safety files and records; prepares reports for management as needed
  • Recommends and enforces disciplinary actions against safety policy violators
  • Ensures all job site electrical hazards are marked and protected to the greatest extent possible
  • Plans, staffs and supervises all assigned department activities through appropriate delegation to department personnel
  • Creates and monitors divisional budget, prepares reports for President/CEO
  • Ensures company policies and procedures are understood and implemented consistently
  • Develops and continually improves the effectiveness of the department’s procedures
  • Evaluates the performance of the departmental staff
  • Provides advice and direction to department personnel toward their professional development
  • Works with the Director of Human Resources on all personnel-related actions
  • Communicates and reinforces the Company vision, values and goals to department staff
  • Performs additional assignments as directed by the President or Division Head
  • Works with Insurance Companies and serves as liaison with Medical Care Providers to assist in claims management.
  • Reviews and Prepares Safety Requirements on Job Prequalification Forms
  • Reviews and Advises on Safety requirements on bidding projects

Essential skills and experience:

  • 4 year occupational safety/health degree or equivalent combinations of training and related experience
  • At least 5-10 years construction safety experience
  • OSHA30 and/or OSHA500 certification
  • Thorough understanding of and ability to enforce all federal, state, local, and Company regulations
  • Ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement corrective measures
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to train and educate others
  • Good computer skills
